THE BLAKE FAMILY HISTORY

Jason Blake Born 1756, Worcester, Massachusetts (served in Revolutionary War). Married Lydia Holbrook - Daughter of Amos Holbrook of Worcester. Jason and Lydia had 13 children.

Their fourth child was Amos Holbrook Blake, born July 3, 1793, in Worcester, Mass.

He married Mary Monroe on November 2, 1820, at Schuyler, Herkimer County, New York.

Mary Monroe was born on June 15, 1800, and was a cousin of President Monroe. She died March 12, 1885, at age 84 years - 9 months and 2 days.

Amos died August 17, 1895, age 82 years, 1 month, 14 days.

Both Amos and Mary are buried in the Blake family lot in Bradford.

The children of Amos and Mary were:

  1. Louise Blake (first daughter)
  2. Mary C. Blake (second daughter)
  3. Louise Blake (third daughter)
  4. Betsy Ann (fourth daughter)
  5. William Blake, oldest boy but not oldest child.
  6. Horace T. Blake, was the youngest son and youngest child.

William Blake was born December 6, 1828 in Herkimer County, New York. He migrated to Illinois in the fall of 1852, when he was 24 years old. He came from Rochester, New York, across Lake Erie by passenger boat, to Detroit, Michigan, then by train to Chicago, and down the Illinois river by boat to Peoria; then went out to what was called Orange Prairie, near Alta and Mt. Hawley, in Peoria County. After two years in Illinois, he returned to visit his parents and brother and sisters.

His sister, Louise, accompanied William back to Illinois. Later the rest of the family came to Illinois. William never made another trip back to New York state.

In the fall of 1856, he came up to Stark County and purchased the south half of the South East Quarter of Section 25, in Osceola Township, southeast of Bradford.

He married Matilda Spellman on Jan 15, 1860. Matilda was the daughter of Allen Spellman, who came to Illinois from Ohio by covered wagon.

William paid $5.00 per acre for the 80 acres he bought; it was raw prairie land; no fences or buildings on it.

Allen Spellman and his family brought 80 acres and settled in the same vicinity with his daughter, Matilda, becoming William's wife.

William Blake and Matilda Spellman were married Jan 15, 1860 by Esquire Whillor, J.P. They commenced housekeeping on the family farm and this is where their family of eight children were born.

  1. William Henry Blake - their first child, born April 6, 1861.
  2. Mary Eunice Blake - first daughter, born May 27, 1863.
  3. Ida Jane Blake, born June 17, 1865
  4. Julia Ann Blake, born March 28, 1868.
  5. Grant Allen Blake, born June 14, 1870 - died August 7, 1961. (His birth occurred on his mother's 30th birthday.)
  6. Amos Russell Blake, born October 23, 1872
  7. Fred Walter Blake, born December 25, 1875 - died October 23, 1879 (not quite 4 years old).
  8. Matilda Blake, born December 30, 1877
William's wife, Matilda Spellman Blake, died September 14, 1881.

On June 25, 1888, William Blake married Anna Marie Moore of Scandia, Kansas.

William Blake died April 26, 1902, and is buried in the Blake lot in Bradford.

On March 8, 1899, Grant Allen Blake married Helen P. Shaw, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Gillman Shaw, at their home in Bradford.

On January 1, 1901, Amos Russell Blake married Josephine Shaw (a sister of Helen Shaw).

SHAW FAMILY

Gillman Jewett Shaw was born at Presque Isle, Maine, on December 14, 1841, the son of Samuel and ________ Shaw, and was the 14th of a family of 16 children.

He received his education in his native state. In the Civil War, he volunteered as a member of the First Regiment, Main Heavy Artillery Company I.

He was mustered into the U.S. Service on August 21, 1862, by Captain Charles C. Bartel, and he served three years.

Gillman Shaw then took his training for his professional life at the medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. Later moving to Illinois, he took up the practice of medicine as a country physician.

He married Lucy Taft Van Doorn at Nokena, Illinois, Will County. Several children were born in Nokena. He moved to Lombardville, Stark County, in 1876, where he had a wide practice. He moved to Bradford, Illinois, in 1896, and retired about 1916.

After the death of his wife in 1922, he spent his remaining days with his daughter, Dr.Viola Shaw Terwilliger.

Lucy H. Taft, daughter of Arron and Sarah Taft, was born at Battle Creek, Michigan, on August 7, 1840. Her family moved to Illinois and settled near Earlville. She married Lt. Van Doorn, to whom two sons were born. She later married Dr. Gillman Shaw at Nokena, Illinois, where their daughters, Viola and Helen, were born.

They then moved to Lombardville in 1876, where the third daughter, Josephine, and sons Wesley and Gillman, were born. Gillman and Lucy Shaw then moved to Bradford 20 years later, where Lucy saw her family all married and settled in life, and the arrival of 19 grandchildren.

Lucy died March 11, 1922, at her residence in Bradford. Lucy Taft Shaw was related to President Taft - a cousin, it is believed.

Amos Russell Blake and Josephine Shaw Blake were the parents of five children:

  1. Isabel Blake
  2. Julia Mildred
  3. Bertha
  4. Clarence
  5. Ralph

Isabel became a nurse. She married Harold Kent of Chillicothe, Illinois. They had one daughter, Barbara. Isabel's husband died, probably in his 40s. Isabel died approximately 1980-1985.

Bertha married Raymond Hughes, and they had four children: Raymond Hadley, Julia Helen, Clarence (Pete) and John Wayne. Bertha's husband died when the children were quite young. Bertha then went to school for her teacher's certificate in order to raise her children. She later married Harold Morris. They are residing in LaFayette, Illinois.

Clarence Blake married Rhoda McKensie, and they had two children, Connie Jean and Michael. Clarence served in World War II in Europe, and then served in the military until retirement. They reside in Virginia, as do their children and their families.

Ralph Blake married Phyllis Cederberg. Ralph also served in the Army during World War II. After the war, Ralph and Phyllis had two children - Kristen Peder and Angela Dawn. Ralph died at about age 32 of carcinoma of the liver. Phyllis never remarried, and resides in LaFayette, Illinois. Kris resides in Illinois. Angela Blake Galliford (husband is Ralph Galliford) have moved from Illinois to Colorado (Castle Rock) in 1991. They have one son (Blake Galliford).

JULIA MILDRED BLAKE MANNING

Julia Blake married Paul Gillman Manning in Bradford, Illinois. Julia and Paul resided in and around Bradford all of their lives. When their children were all grown and gone, they moved to Chillicothe, Illinois. After Paul's retirement they moved temporarily to Wisconsin, and then back to Chillicothe when Paul became ill. He died in Jan. 26, 1975.

Paul and Julia (Blake) Manning children:

  1. David Eugene Manning (married Joyce Bernard) - 7 children (Jeffrey, Kenneth, Kevin, Vernon, Mary, Julie, and Amy.
  2. Lois Maxine Manning (married Marvin Martin) - 3 children (Steve, Brian, and Keith)
  3. Viola Josephine Manning (married Thomas Foulks) - 4 children (Thomas Eugene, Jr., Kathleen Marie, Joseph Paul, and Dana Alan)
  4. Bertha Col leen Manning (married John Gerber) - Previous marriage produced two children, Michael and Bonnie.
  5. Jerry Paul Manning (married Linda Rediger) - Three children (Cindy, Randy, and Emily).
